The Fragility of Life: Trauma, Narcissism and the Unpredictable

Louise Fréchette, M.Ps., Bioenergetic Analyst (CBT), IIBA Faculty member

Right at the beginning of life of any life form, there is fragility. Then, as human beings, we grow up, we get stronger, we build ourselves a life, we make projects. But then the unexpected happens and throws us off-balance, putting us in a state of vulnerability. The sensation of the fragility of life is made even more present since we are living in an era of turmoil and change on a planetary level. Collective and personal dramas affect us and can have a traumatic impact as well as an impact on our narcissism, confronting us to our powerlessness over certain situations.  What is the impact of unpredictable events on our nervous system? How can we learn to cope with these situations that make us feel how fragile life can be? How can we use our body as ground to help us find our balance as we live through challenging times?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this presentation participants will be able to:

  • Identify the traumatic impact of one or two unpredictable events in their life, as well as identify how those events impacted their narcissistic issues.

  • Use three exercises to tune in to their body and in particular to their autonomic nervous system (Dana, 2021) in times of uncertainty.

  • Select two strategies to help themselves and their patients find their own ground and self-regulate when coping with states of imbalance resulting from unpredictable events in their lives.
